Every event happy is so natural , though we think it was so unimaginable . How we can speak ? why we can run ? who let you think .

When I write the Shadow puppet ‘s event , I can’t answer myself so many questions .

Because I don’t go through the shadow puppet ‘s condition , the shadow puppet ‘s history . Maybe some person we say , you are wrong , I can see shadow puppet ‘s as artwork anywhere , can buy them anywhere , and I can see the performance shadow puppet any time on TV (by VCD or DVD) . I will say ,no no no . All you see are not the true face . Because the artwork don’t have life if they leave the screen , if they leave the people’s life ,if they only as the tool of gift for some people ‘s power .

Here I will tell shadow puppet family’s family to show what is the true shadow puppet ‘s era .

We will see , every old shadow puppet artist is the history about shadow puppet after you read him.

There is a example for I tell the story .

The people leave in twenty century and twenty one century all hear the Supper Star named “迈克尔.杰克逊”，if he like music , and more of them can dunce some movement as him if he like dance . Why , that is because we live in that era .

Because it is so easy to make , they can play them as the bauble .But who teach them ? No one teach them hand by hand . Just because every village had the shadow puppet club . They play them when finished the autumn harvest , when have the free time . Because there were no TV or Movie to show in the village in that era , and the traffic is very bad , more of the people can’t remove very far , so they only find by his mind . The information was also very block . The Childes only imitate them as the idol or Star .In that era , play shadow puppet is the fashion .

We can find three factors from that example :

Right space , topographic advantages,

Right person ‘s heart , Many people can help you ,can support you

Chinese means : 天时，地利，人和。

Young Year of Mister Lu

Fuzeng Lu burn in 1948 , before New Chinese’s set up . If we read the Chinese recent history ,we will understand the condition of China well .

Every village was slow at that time . As my father said , if there was a making hardware came , great majority people would saw . Because they did know . The information that villager got , only by ,by radio .

Just because the base of shadow puppet ‘s village developing , every village had the shadow puppet box . They play it very often . Just for the amusement . Yes , many people ponder as this . But it is not the base . This amusement was not only the amusement , because every person know it ,like it . no matter the boy ,the girl ,the young man , the women ,the oldest people . It was really the folk culture . Why , because it was so near to every person , just beside you .

Fu zeng _Lu ‘s village named ‘Xiao Man Gang’ . When he was young ,he often see the playing shadow puppet as other Child . Then carve the shadow puppet by paper when came home . There were three child friends also carve shadow puppet . So they can exchanged any time .

At the time for child read school , they also played the shadow puppet at class . The teacher teach the course before , they carve the paper shadow puppet on the desk . They used the knife just for carve pencil . Some student made a pencil on the knife on the carve knife when worried teacher criticized . If teacher saw him, just like writed something . In front stand a book . When they finished work , they will play it by hand . Left hand was upright , right hand was the obverse .

This life last for three years . He must leave school when three grade . One day , he saw mother cook at home , there was no firewood for cook . So mother took the wood from the landlady .Is it the life ? Because the family was so poor , because the mother was not qualified ,because the father was died . So he leave school . When the reporter ask my father history , he said often dream he went to school ,even he is over sixty years . That is why my father supper us to studying , suppose us finished university .

When go back , he spend much time on carving shadow puppet .

Just at that time ,there was an old artiste in the village named Wei tang _ Wang . He carved cow skin shadow puppet for the shadow puppet organized group ever year . So he often saw him carving in his home . Mister Wang don’t advert this child , because there were so many babies saw him carving . But only my father take it as work in the consciousness at that time . He carving many works by alone . Then took them to Mister Wang , hope learn to him . Mister Wang allow , ask he to carved the part of shadow puppet . He work for him for three years . Learn the true shadow puppet culture . It was 16 year .

For make more money , my father leave Mister Wang , to caved by himself . But some field didn’t know very well , because the Tangshan Shadow puppet ‘s history is over 500 years . When he didn’t know how to painted , he will take them to Mister Wang to paint , carve by himself , then give Mister Wang some money .

life last for two year ,then the “文化大革命”—(the Great Cultural Revolution) broken .

Quilkly developing Year for Mister Lu’s Shadow puppet

Right time : It was the 1976 year , the ten years “文化大革命” —(the Great Cultural Revolution)became the history . The literature and art been liberate and second by the Chinese government . So the folk art was also prosperous . Every village stared to make shadow puppet tool , because also all of the shadow puppet been burn down with other religion article in that ten years .

So many shadow puppet need to carve . Mister Lu can’t finished so many duties . So he found Mister Wang , his teacher to make .

Mister Lu got married with Yi shu _Xu in 1976 when he 28 years , his wife just 27 years .They were been introduced . his wife is so super , not only can crop crop , but also can help the husband to make shadow puppet . Mister Lu spend all of the energy and time on the shadow puppet , so he can’t do other thing well , at the same time , his character is so inside , didn’t get the exchange with other people . So he was so hard to do anything besides make shadow puppet . ALL Of the things need Mother to do .

But this didn’t became the obstacle about help her husband . She learn how to painting ,and more vocational than the husband . Mister Lu paint the sample , then the Mother consult it , if some color not so perfect , she try to used other color . Everyone had his aesthetic . But Mother Xu is so good . That was not all , she think up ‘hang elbow painting ‘ way to paint shadow puppet , the arm don’t contact anything . Just as school painter . But Mother never learn the painting . She only learn six years in school . It is so great . That is not all , in fact Mother don’t like make shadow puppet , don’t like painting . She said she enjoy crop , enjoy to crop anything . But why she can do it for over thirty years , Just for the life ; why can paint it so well ? Just because the earnest manner . by the responsibility heart .

Not every day is sunshine . Mister Lu got ill just got married two years ago , the poor life , low medical treatment made him can’t do anything .

One year , two year , the third year , his body got well , then he got out to buy cow skin . No one help him to find the way , no one teach him to scrape skin . Only by one time he saw the person scraping crow skin in his teacher home . The price of cow skin for carve shadow puppet was so high at that time . Over 3 yuan one square chinese musical note.

The price was thirty years price . For reduce the cost , Mister Lu choose this way —do it by himself .

Not more money to buy the cow skin to try , he just buy the dog’s skin ,the sheep’s skin , the pig’s skin , ,,,,,,,,

Sorry , I can’t write more about this , there were so many hardship and tears .

Over five years feel , he learn that .

Because many area need shadow puppet , so the cow skin price so high , Mister Lu used the bad part , the best part sell out .

1982year , his son Tianxiang_LU born . It is the new began for the family , Because the named has one word Tian xiang , Chinese mines ‘上天’give the son , ‘吉祥’for every one . So the family just as find the path . Mister Lu went out to learn more other folk art .

That is not enough . He became to visit Tangshan Shadow puppet theatrical company ‘s leader , named Yong heng_Qi , who is very famous for play shadow puppet in China .

He is the good leader , not only his playing skill ,but also his morality . He teach Mister Lu many thing about how to let the shadow puppet more nimble ,more vivid ,more image .

Yongheng_Qi is the important teacher for my father’s shadow puppet . But now ,the new leader is so rubbish and depravity . When Mister Qi leave the Tangshan shadow puppet theatrical company , we don’t go there very often .

There was also one teacher helpful for Mister Lu ‘s artist road . Who named Bao cai_Tang . He is not in Tang shan , but also belong the He bei province . He like shadow puppet very much . His post was Culture curator about Kuan Cheng country .

The Culture didn’t only had the shadow puppet , but also had the local opera named ‘Ping ju’ just as beijing opera . There were so many clothes about Ping JU . So He can design shadow puppet modeling by them . Then ask my father to carve . Mister Lu never saw them before , so they make friends each other .

In 1997 year , just Hong Kong came back to China , Ming ri leader mane Sim Wong find

The China wooden image and shadow puppet society secretary named Yuan cheng _Pan ,who also the Stage Design Artist , ask to find the folk shadow puppet artist , he want to buy a shadow puppet box , not the government’s , but the folk , he find the Yong heng_ Qi , the Tangshan shadow puppet leader , the Mister Qi introduce my father .

Sim Wong make friend with Mister Lu . One year passed , we finished the work.

Strategy move

The move idea start by one events . It was 1996 years or 1997 years , The Beijing artist about shadow puppet named Lian da _ Lu (路连达) came to Tangshan , to find my father . He was be introduced by my friend Yuan cheng_Pan , he want invited my father to Beijing Shadow puppet company to help them make shadow puppet . There was no telephone at that time . People contact by writing letters . They agreed what time to my family . The traffic was so Inconvenient , no bus , no car . Person must rented the bicycle at the bus station what is far from my family . On that day , Lian da _Lu came here , but when he arrived my village to ask people where is my home , that people take him to another shadow puppet maker home , that one named Li hua _Wang , he stay in that home for three hours , then it is time to eating , they take him to my home . Two week ago , Li hua _ Wang came to Beijing , stay here for two years .

There were many reasons for that result , but Mister Lu (卢先生) think the traffic is one reason , so he decision to move , the new home in this village has my father’s relative , his niece , so our family borrow 20,000 from the relative to move here . Buy the old house .

Mother didn’t like to move , just for the house , for the land ,for the old villager people .

The house our family buy was not as well as they though , the new villager people not as friendly as they though , our family also been bully by the neighbor , because they always take us as the stranger . So Mother often went to old home every month , Grow crops , see her house . But this not stop her painting shadow puppet . Every time Mother went back , must take some shadow puppet to painting . The traffic was not well at that time ,so she must by bike .

In fact , move to new home was really helpful for our shadow puppet ‘s developing .

It was 2000years , one person named Xiao yang_ Li stand up a folk art museum . It was the first private museum . He buy many shadow puppet from us to show and sell . The price at time was higher than make to the playing shadow puppet club . So we earn some money . It was just the time for me enter high school . The money was helpful me and our family . Just at time , Mister Lu ‘s works start to change , as the Crafts to make . One beautiful shadow puppet can copy over 100 .

Our home is near by the city ,so he often drive the car to my house to buy . For his museum more famous , many shadow puppet artist find him , then we not his only seller . The price stared to low .

But lucky for us , in 2002 year, another person named Da cheng_Zhou find us . He has a shop to sell the paintings . He has the special channels about the Government , so he want sell the shadow puppet to them . The first seller also us . The price he give was higher than Xiao yang –Li , and he was so understand painting art , so he approved our works . During 2002 to 2005 years , our works always No.1 . The duty he give us was so more , that our family can’t make out , so my father find other person to make . we make the sample for them , give them the color , sell them best cow skin , teach them how to care more well . But that not prevent them leave us . In 2005 years , our city held a worl d shadow puppet painting and carving activities , Not only Chinese shadow puppet company join ,but also the Japanese , the Tia wan land , the US company .

Just at time , more shadow puppet artist find the seller , then they all leave us .

But lucky for us , just because me learn to my father in 2002 years , the only reason I learn was to earn more money to study , because I want enter University . During 2002 to 2005 years , I make many shadow puppet . the interesting thing was , what I made all sell at time , because they need more ,because they don’t understand at that time , although my works were not qualified . When they all leave my father in 2005 years , I just finished my study , then I start carve shadow puppet for my father . Just the helpful about three carving shadow puppet basis , so I start to caved the key parts —-the shadow puppet head . I carve it only in the holiday when I in University , so this was the formal study .

The more time , you can’t ask other people to help except the family . When we duty very more , my father can’t scraped the cow skin in time , so he must buy some from other people . There was one person scraped it for all the life ,we all called him ‘Lao Cao’ ,who was over 70 years at that time . My father buy the scraped knife from him too . the knife was over 100 years , no person know what was the knife made from . We contact for many years . But one time , the other shadow puppet named Ya jun _Zhang also buy from him , she was so envy us , then tell the Lao Cao , don’t sell my father the cow skin , she give him 20,000 yuan for book price . Then ‘Lao Cao ’ never contact us for two years , that was we really need the crow skin .

Lucky for us , just because my father can scraped it by himself , then I start to learn it for one year .

2006—2008 year was the end about shadow puppet market time . Our family make some money , my little sister finished the study , I learn more cultural about shadow puppet , visit many artist .

There was a views from old shadow puppet artist left : the cycle about shadow puppet is 20 years . I don’t think it is the law about shadow puppet . because everything is changing . But it was just 20 years for our family .

Form 2008 years , the Mechanical shadow puppet what was carve by laser appeared . In fact the mechanical shadow puppet about Xi’an had many years . But the Tang shan shadow puppet appeared just this time . The true shadow puppet price changed .

The other reason was the World Economic outbreak . many people who had buy the shadow puppet before as the investment was stopped .

That year was the difficult for us . But lucky for us , just in that time , my Hong Kong friend find me to make the ‘Teaching props’ for Hong Kong Kindergarten. When it finished ,a anime company find me to make some cartoon shadow puppet named ‘Panda legend’ . We make it for one year , although it was failure . But it was helpful for us .

Whet knife for ten years

If the art cater the market for no principle , the art will lose it’s root . But we can’t change the present situation about the trade by any one . But we must do it .

For make sure the true art , Mister Lu start studying the shadow puppet , not only carved the shadow puppet ; I take the craving shadow puppet as a will training .

We plan to use ten years 2000 to 2010 to ‘whet knife ’ , to whet the will . maybe ten years , everything will change .
